On a spring afternoon in Colorado Springs, the tranquility of Monument Valley Park was shattered by the sound of a gunshot. It was May 21, 1991, and 45-year-old Karen Kay Johns, a White female, was taking her lunch break from her job at the American Red Cross. She was seated in her vehicle when she was fatally shot.
