On September 12, 1990, as she was leaving a lupus support group meeting at a community center, she was ambushed in a calculated and brutal attack. A figure disguised in military-style fatigues and a ski mask confronted her, snatched her purse to stage a robbery, and then shot her.
As she lay on the ground, the attacker fired a second, fatal shot.
The investigation into the seemingly random act of violence soon unraveled a sinister plot born from a secret affair. The perpetrator was identified as 28-year-old Jennifer Reali, who was engaged in an extramarital relationship with Dianne's husband, Brian Hood. Reali confessed to the killing but maintained that she had been manipulated and coerced by her lover. She claimed Brian Hood had convinced her that murdering his wife was part of 'God's plan,' framing it as a merciful release from her suffering with lupus.
The ensuing legal proceedings captivated the public, earning the case the moniker of the 'Fatal Attraction' murder. Jennifer Reali was arrested just two days after the shooting and was ultimately convicted of first-degree murder, receiving a life sentence. Brian Hood was also arrested and faced justice for his role in orchestrating his wife's death. He was found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and solicitation of murder, which resulted in a 37-year prison sentence.
Years later, the case saw further developments. Jennifer Reali's life sentence was commuted, making her eligible for parole, which was granted in 2017.
