A gathering of family to celebrate a birthday on Mother's Day turned into a scene of unimaginable horror, leaving a community in Colorado Springs reeling and a family decimated. Sandra Cecilia Ibarra, a 28-year-old female, was among the six victims of a mass shooting that unfolded in the early hours of May 9, 2021, at a mobile home park on the east side of the city. The celebration was shattered when a boyfriend, angered by not being invited, opened fire on the attendees before turning the gun on himself.
The suspect was identified as Teodoro Macias, 28, who had been in a relationship with Sandra Ibarra for about a year. According to police, Macias harbored controlling and jealous behaviors, often attempting to isolate Sandra from her family. This jealousy appeared to have come to a head when he was excluded from the family party. He arrived at the residence alone and, in a methodical and deliberate manner, shot and killed Sandra and five of her family members. The other victims were identified as Jose Ibarra, 26; Mayra Ibarra De Perez, 33; Melvin Perez, 30; Joana Cruz, 52; and Jose Gutierrez, 21.
The scene that first responders entered was one of profound tragedy. Inside the home, seven adults lay dead, including the shooter. Miraculously, three children, aged 2, 5, and 11, who were present during the horrific event, were physically unharmed. One adult family member managed to escape the residence without injury. The investigation that followed pointed to domestic violence as the core motive behind the horrendous act. There had been no prior official reports of domestic violence between Macias and Ibarra. After carrying out the killings, Teodoro Macias died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene, leaving no possibility for an arrest. The incident left behind a grieving community and orphaned children, a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence.
