On a tragic day in June of 2022, 44-year-old Melody Dwan Horton of El Paso County, Colorado, lost her life. Her death, which occurred on June 24, 2022, was the result of a homicide. An autopsy was later performed by the El Paso County Coroner's Office to officially determine the cause and manner of her death.
The circumstances of her death became clearer when 52-year-old David Mitchell of Colorado Springs walked into the El Paso County Jail and confessed to killing his wife.
Following his confession, deputies discovered Ms. Horton's body inside a vehicle in the visitor parking lot of the jail. The investigation revealed that the murder had taken place in unincorporated El Paso County.
An arrest affidavit detailed the premeditated nature of the crime, stating that Mitchell had been planning to kill his wife for a day prior to the shooting. The motive appeared to be related to financial stress, as Mitchell had been unemployed for a year and a half, and his wife was reportedly upset about unpaid child support. He allegedly shot her four or five times with a 9mm pistol he had purchased over a year before the incident, shortly after picking her up from her home. After the shooting, he drove to the El Paso County Jail and, after some internal struggle, turned himself in to the authorities. David Mitchell was arrested and booked into the El Paso County Jail on a count of first-degree murder. A judge subsequently denied him bond.
