In what should have been a time for family and togetherness, the day before Thanksgiving in 2016 turned into a scene of terror and tragedy in the quiet community of Security-Widefield, just outside of Colorado Springs. Karyn Lorbiecki, a 45-year-old mother of two, found her life cut short in a violent encounter that unfolded within the walls of her own home.
The events of November 23, 2016, would leave a lasting scar on her family and the community.
The day began with a violent altercation between Karyn and her husband, Gregory Lorbiecki. The couple's two children, a daughter and a son, were thrust into a nightmare when they witnessed their father physically assaulting their mother. Realizing the gravity of the situation, the children managed to escape the house and seek help, a brave act that likely saved them from further harm. Their escape, however, marked the beginning of a tense and prolonged standoff with law enforcement.
For four harrowing hours, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office surrounded the Lorbiecki home, attempting to negotiate a peaceful resolution. Inside, Gregory Lorbiecki held his wife hostage. As the standoff wore on, the situation escalated tragically. Gregory Lorbiecki shot Karyn in the head, inflicting a fatal wound. After committing this irreversible act, he set his pistol aside and surrendered to the waiting authorities.
Gregory Lorbiecki was arrested at the scene and subsequently faced the full weight of the justice system. He was charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping. The former soldier and long-haul trucker would ultimately be held accountable for his actions, bringing a somber conclusion to a case of domestic violence that had shattered a family. Karyn, remembered as a beautiful person with a kind spirit who loved her job as a medical assistant, was mourned by her surviving parents, two older brothers, and her two children whom she adored.
