In the early morning hours of May 28, 2023, a shooting shattered the quiet of a 7-Eleven on B Street in unincorporated El Paso County, Colorado. When El Paso County deputies arrived around 3 a.m., they found 25-year-old Sylena Maldonado with gunshot wounds. Following the guilty verdict, Kevin Rued was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In a statement, El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal expressed his hope that the sentence would bring some comfort to Sylena Maldonado's family, knowing that justice had been served. He also commended the work of his Investigations Division and the District Attorney's Office for their dedication in holding Rued accountable for his actions.
