In a quiet home on Heather Glen Drive in Colorado Springs, the life of 26-year-old Lizet Salinas-Mijangos was tragically cut short on the evening of February 1, 2022. Responding to a distressing 911 call around 6:55 p.m., police officers discovered a horrific scene. Inside the residence, Lizet and her eight-month-old son, George, were found deceased, both having suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
A second child, the couple's 20-month-old daughter, was also present in the home but was physically unharmed.
The individual who made the emergency call was Lizet's 29-year-old husband and the father of the children, David Corey Weingarten. In his chilling confession to the 911 dispatcher, Weingarten admitted to the killings, stating that he had been feeling unwell and that 'something just came over' him. He also mentioned that he had been hearing things and was confused about what had transpired. Upon their arrival, officers took Weingarten into custody without incident. He reiterated his confession to the arresting officers, simply stating, 'I shot them.'
During subsequent interviews with detectives, Weingarten provided a more detailed account of the events leading up to the tragedy. He disclosed that he had been experiencing troubling thoughts throughout the day, which prompted him to retrieve his forty-five caliber handgun from his vehicle. He claimed that his son's crying had made him anxious, contributing to his decision to end their lives. Weingarten told investigators that he believed shooting them would be a quick and less painful death. Following his arrest, David Weingarten was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. The surviving daughter was placed in the care of family members.
