In a tragic incident in Colorado Springs, 35-year-old Laura Tong, a female resident, was found deceased in her home on Hopeful Drive on the morning of November 24, 2021. The discovery was made by a roommate who then alerted the authorities. When police arrived, they found Ms. Tong in a bedroom with multiple gunshot wounds.

Further investigation revealed a second deceased individual in the living room, identified as 36-year-old Michael Tong, Laura's husband. Michael Tong was found to have a gunshot wound. The El Paso County Coroner's Office later conducted autopsies and officially ruled Laura Tong's death a homicide. Michael Tong's death was determined to be a suicide.

Detectives from the Colorado Springs Police Department's Homicide/Assault Unit took over the investigation. Through interviews and examination of the evidence, they concluded that the incident was an act of domestic violence, a murder-suicide in which Michael Tong was the sole perpetrator. No other suspects were sought in connection with Laura Tong's death as the individual responsible had taken his own life. At the time, her death marked the 40th homicide investigation in Colorado Springs for that year.
