In the summer of 2020, a heart-wrenching incident unfolded in a Commerce City, Colorado, home, ending the life of a young boy. Three-year-old Osiris Grey Rodriquez Herrada died on July 16, 2020, from a gunshot wound. The tragedy occurred on a Thursday afternoon at a residence located on the 7800 block of Jasmine Drive. At the time of the shooting, Osiris was in the house with his two older brothers, aged 12 and 13. There were no adults present when the fatal event took place.
A preliminary investigation by the Commerce City Police Department suggested that the young boy's death was the tragic result of the mishandling of a loaded firearm found at the scene. When officers arrived at the home shortly after 3 p.m. following a report of shots fired, they discovered the three-year-old in a bedroom. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The two older brothers were not physically harmed during the incident.
In the months following the young child's death, an arrest was made in connection with the case. The boy's father, 32-year-old Jose Manuel Rodriguez, was taken into custody. The 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office announced in late September 2020 that Rodriguez faced felony charges, including negligent child abuse resulting in death and possession of a weapon by a previous offender. It was not made clear who was handling the gun when it discharged.
