In the late summer of 2020, the life of 31-year-old Daniel J. Ritchie Jr. was unexpectedly cut short in Colorado Springs, Colorado. On the morning of August 1st, police responded to a call about an assault and shooting at the Vineyards of Colorado Springs apartment complex on Mira Linda Point. Upon arrival, they discovered Mr. Ritchie deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. Another man, 35-year-old Jason Wall, was also found at the scene with serious injuries, including facial and skull fractures, and was transported to a local hospital.
The ensuing investigation by the Colorado Springs Police Department's Violent Crimes Section revealed the events that transpired in the hours leading up to the fatal shooting. Mr. Ritchie and Mr. Wall had met at a party in a neighboring apartment on the evening of July 31st. After the party, Wall invited Ritchie and his girlfriend back to his apartment to continue drinking. Later in the evening, Ritchie's girlfriend departed, leaving the two men alone.
According to the investigation, Wall fell asleep on his couch and was later awakened by an assault from Ritchie, who was making demands of him. Wall then retreated to his bedroom, where he retrieved a handgun. Despite Wall's repeated warnings for Ritchie to leave his apartment and his statement that he would shoot, Ritchie continued to approach him. Wall then fired a single shot, which struck Ritchie in the head. Immediately after, Wall called 911 to report the incident. After a thorough investigation, which included multiple interviews and the processing of physical evidence that corroborated Wall's account, the case was referred to the 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office. On October 21, 2020, the District Attorney's Office announced that no charges would be filed against Jason Wall, ruling that he was justified in shooting Mr. Ritchie in self-defense.
