In the spring of 2019, the life of Nicholas Laduke, a 37-year-old male, was cut short in a fatal shooting in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The tragic events of March 12 unfolded at an apartment complex near Winewood Village Drive, stemming from a complex romantic entanglement.
That evening, Laduke had dinner with Andrew Firkins Jr. and a woman named Shelby Stallwood, with whom both men were romantically involved.
After they returned to Stallwood's home, the atmosphere soured as Firkins became upset with both Laduke and Stallwood. The situation escalated when Stallwood went to her room and discovered her handgun was missing.
A confrontation erupted between Firkins and Laduke. Stallwood reported hearing multiple gunshots inside the residence. When she emerged, she was met with the harrowing sight of Laduke on the ground and Firkins standing over him. In the moments that followed, Firkins left the home, and Stallwood immediately called 911 for help.
When Colorado Springs police officers arrived at the scene, they found Firkins sitting in a neighbor's lawn chair approximately 50 feet away. He was identified and taken into custody. During a subsequent pre-trial readiness conference, a DNA analyst with the Colorado Springs Police Department testified that Firkins's blood was found at the scene of the crime.
