In the crisp autumn of 2018, the life of a bright-eyed two-year-old boy named Lohki Richard Bloom was tragically cut short in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The energetic toddler, known for his love of dancing and singing 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star' with his mother, died on October 21, 2018. His nicknames included lil-man, Yoki, and Bra-da, and he had a particular fondness for riding in his dad's truck.
On that fateful Sunday night, Lohki's parents flagged down El Paso County Sheriff's
deputies, his mother holding the young boy in her arms. It was discovered that Lohki had accidentally shot himself. The investigation revealed that he had found a loaded handgun left in a home office. Surveillance footage from inside the residence showed the tragic moments as the little boy, accustomed to playing with a squirt gun, pointed the weapon into his mouth and pulled the trigger.
The firearm, which had no safety and a round in the chamber, belonged to his mother, Melissa Michelle Adamson. Authorities reported that Adamson, who was 32 at the time, was high on methamphetamine and had been arguing with a drug dealer when she failed to secure the weapon. She had received threatening text messages and, against the advice of Lohki's father, had loaded the gun and left it accessible. Investigators also found an ax and drug needles within reach of the children in the home.
In the wake of her son's death, Melissa Adamson was arrested and charged with child abuse resulting in death. In December 2019, after pleading guilty, a judge sentenced her to 24 years in prison for her role in the devastating incident that ended the life of her young son.
