James Roepke, 52, male, was spending the late hours of May 16 rolling into the early morning of May 17, 1986 at the Grand View Lounge in northeast Colorado Springs when a gunman entered the quiet bar and opened fire. Firefighters arrived around 2:50 a.m. to battle flames inside the lounge and instead uncovered a crime scene: three people shot in the head, among them Roepke, a patron.
The bartender, Debbie Green, 29, and another patron, Joanne McNamara, 46, were found alongside him as smoke drifted through the dim interior. Investigators soon determined the gunman had moved next door to the Kwik-Way convenience store in the same shopping strip and shot the two clerks—sisters Sandra Ann Howard, 22, and Elaine Sindlesecker, 19—before slipping into the dark and jumping a fence to get away. The bar had been set on fire, an apparent attempt to destroy evidence and delay discovery of the bodies.
Detectives pieced together the route of the killer and, crucially, recovered a clear surveillance photograph from the Kwik-Way that captured his face and clothing. The image led them to identify a 29-year-old local plumber, Gilbert Eugenio Archibeque, and obtain an arrest warrant accusing him of five counts of first-degree murder. Ballistic and investigative details pointed to a. 357-caliber revolver as the murder weapon, and the working theory was grimly simple: a robbery within the lounge that escalated into executions, followed by the arson and the quick walk to the neighboring store to eliminate witnesses.
The pursuit ended the next day. Tracked to his apartment after a neighbor recognized the surveillance photo, Archibeque answered a police call in the early hours, said “OK” when told to surrender, and then shot himself in the head with a. 357 revolver. With the suspect dead, there were no arrests and no trial; the motive was never definitively established, though accounts at the time pointed to a robbery and the fear of being recognized as the likely spark for the spree. For Roepke and the other victims, the investigation closed with the lone suspect deceased and no other assailants sought.
