In May of 2018, a 17-year-old male, Marshall Aaron Mitschelen, was killed in a shooting in northeast Colorado Springs. The incident occurred in the 2900 block of Whileaway Circle.
Initial reports suggested the gunshot wound was self-inflicted. However, upon investigation and speaking with witnesses, police determined that another 17-year-old male was responsible for the fatal shot.
Friends of Marshall have described the shooting as accidental.
Following the shooting, a suspect reportedly fled to a house on Enchanted Circle, leading to an hours-long standoff with the Colorado Springs Police Department's tactical officers. Despite the extensive search of the home, the suspect was not found inside. An arrest warrant for manslaughter was issued for the 17-year-old suspect, whose name was not released due to his juvenile status. Police continued to search for the suspect following the standoff.
