On the evening of June 18, 2022, a senseless act of violence on Interstate 70 in Aurora, Colorado, tragically cut short the life of 37-year-old John 'Cowboy' Jaros. A male, Jaros was the assistant chief of the Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Department, a man dedicated to saving lives. He was driving home with his wife and three young children after a weekend camping trip, a time meant for family and creating memories.
Their journey was violently interrupted when their Dodge Ram pickup truck was riddled with bullets.
The events leading to the fatal shooting began with a street racing incident on I-70. Traffic had been deliberately stopped by several vehicles to create a makeshift racetrack on the interstate. Jaros, unaffiliated with the street racers, attempted to navigate his truck around the stopped traffic. It was then that shots were fired into his vehicle. Struck by the gunfire, Jaros was killed in the presence of his family. In the immediate aftermath, his wife managed to steer their truck to the side of the road.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly. The Aurora Police Department's Major Crimes Homicide Unit identified a suspect through witness testimony and collected evidence. In the early morning hours of June 23, 2022, investigators arrested 20-year-old Jeremy Jacob Rocha in Commerce City. Rocha was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and four counts of attempted first-degree murder for endangering the lives of Jaros's wife and children.
Jeremy Jacob Rocha faced trial for his actions on that fateful evening. In May 2024, a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder, first-degree murder with extreme indifference, and four counts of attempted murder. The conviction brought a measure of justice for the senseless killing of John Jaros, a man who was taken from his family and community by a burst of violence born from a reckless street race.
