In the late summer of 2016, a tragic incident in Aurora, Colorado, resulted in the death of 20-year-old Genesis Rodriguez. On the evening of August 25th, police were called to the Bristol Village Apartments where they discovered Rodriguez with a gunshot wound. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to her injuries and passed away.

Her husband, 21-year-old Brian Lebron-Rivera, who was an airman stationed at Buckley Air Force Base, told investigators that the shooting was unintentional. According to his account, he was attempting to demonstrate to his wife how one might disarm someone by taking a gun away from them. He claimed he was not aware that the handgun was loaded at the time of this demonstration. During the interaction, the firearm discharged, striking Genesis.
Following the incident and an initial investigation into the events that transpired, Brian Lebron-Rivera was taken into custody by the Aurora Police Department. He was subsequently arrested and faced a charge of manslaughter in connection with his wife's death.
