On the evening of March 9, 2022, a burst of gunfire shattered the ordinary quiet of a Quality Inn in Aurora, Colorado, leaving a young life extinguished and several others irrevocably altered. Ronald Heriberto Calderon Ramirez, a 16-year-old male, was fatally wounded in the encounter, a grim testament to a night of violence that also resulted in injuries to four other individuals.
The shooting, which unfolded at the hotel located on North Ouray Street, prompted a swift and intensive investigation by law enforcement.
The investigation into the shooting led to the apprehension of four suspects. Among them were 18-year-old Rafael Martinez, 17-year-old Rizvan Rastogor, and 17-year-old Damien Lucero. A fourth individual, also a juvenile, was taken into custody in connection with the incident. The charges brought against Martinez, Rastogor, and Lucero were severe, including first-degree murder and multiple counts of attempted first-degree murder, reflecting the gravity of the violence that claimed Ronald Ramirez's life and endangered others. The two younger suspects, Rastogor and Lucero, also faced charges related to the illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile. The fourth juvenile suspect was charged with being an accessory to a crime and illegal handgun possession.
In the ensuing legal process, the paths of the accused diverged. Rafael Martinez and Damien Lucero both entered into plea agreements. Martinez pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and, in June 2024, was sentenced to six years in a youthful offender system. This sentence came with a deferred 21-year prison term, contingent on his successful completion of the initial program. Similarly, Damien Lucero pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and, in May 2024, received a seven-year sentence in the youthful offender system, also with a deferred 21-year prison sentence.
The case against Rizvan Rastogor proceeded to trial, where he faced the original charges of first-degree murder. In April 2025, a jury found him guilty. Subsequently, in July 2025, Rizvan Rastogor was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the death of Ronald Ramirez. The legal proceedings for the fourth juvenile suspect have remained confidential due to their age. The culmination of these legal efforts brought a measure of resolution to the tragic death of Ronald Ramirez, though the impact of the violence continues to resonate with those affected.
