On a bright Monday, June 5, 2023, Stephen Dennis Qualls, a 48-year-old Black male, had reason to celebrate. He had just secured a new job as a train operator for the RTD, a position he was genuinely excited about. That evening, returning from a celebratory dinner, he was a passenger in a vehicle in Aurora, Colorado, accompanied by two other adults and two small children.
The mood was joyous, a stark contrast to the tragedy that was about to unfold.
As their vehicle approached the intersection of South Havana Street and East Idaho Place, an encounter with another driver escalated into a fatal road-rage incident. Witnesses reported that a red or maroon Ford Explorer with a tan trim was being driven erratically. At a stoplight, an exchange occurred between the occupants of the two vehicles. In a senseless act of violence, a shot was fired from the suspect's vehicle, striking Qualls.
Emergency services were called to the scene just before 10:00 p.m., and Qualls was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries. The Aurora Police Department quickly launched an investigation, appealing to the public for any information, particularly dashcam footage, that might help identify the shooter. The suspect vehicle was last seen heading southbound on Havana Street.
Friends and family remembered Stephen Dennis Qualls as a noble, gentle, and strong-willed man who was a mentor to young Black men in his circle. His sudden and violent death left a void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. As of now, the investigation into his murder continues, and authorities are still searching for the individual responsible for this tragic loss of life. No arrests have been made, and no specific suspects have been publicly identified.
