Jaylan Demetrious Moton, a 20-year-old male, was a young man from Thornton, Colorado, with a reputation for having a big heart and a deep respect for everyone he met. He was known for his love of life, family, and friends, and his presence could light up a room. Working as a roofer, he took great pride in his determination and hard work. His passions included fast cars, especially old-school muscle cars, gaming, and football season, where he was a walking encyclopedia of sports knowledge.
On the evening of July 21, 2025, a tragic series of events unfolded in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 100 block of Kenton Street in Aurora, a place where he did not reside. Jaylan and a 21-year-old male companion were lured to this location by two teenagers with the intention of being robbed. Around 9:45 p.m., the encounter turned violent. During the course of the attempted robbery, shots were fired. Jaylan was struck by a gunshot, sustaining life-threatening injuries. His companion managed to escape the scene unharmed.
First responders arrived to find Jaylan wounded in the parking lot. He was rushed to a local hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away. The Arapahoe County Coroner's Office later officially identified him as the victim. The Aurora Police Department's Major Crime Homicide Unit immediately launched an investigation into the senseless act of violence that cut short a promising young life.
The investigation led police to two juvenile suspects from Aurora, a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old. The 16-year-old was taken into custody just two days after the incident, on July 23. The 14-year-old was arrested on July 29. Both teenagers face serious charges, including second-degree murder, aggravated robbery, unlawful handgun possession by a juvenile, and theft. The younger suspect faces an additional charge of attempted first-degree murder, as it was determined he also fired at Jaylan's companion who was able to get away. Because the suspects are minors, their names have not been publicly released.
