On a late Wednesday night, September 2, 2015, the sound of gunfire shattered the peace outside the Fitzsimons Apartments at 1568 Nome Street in Aurora, Colorado. When the chaos subsided, 14-year-old Marcell Jay Johnson, a Black male, was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. Another teenager, a 17-year-old boy, was also struck by a bullet in the arm but survived his injuries. The incident cut short the life of young Marcell, who had just embarked on his first week of high school.
