In March of 2021, the community of Murray, Kentucky, was shaken by the tragic death of Sarah Elizabeth Townsend, a 21-year-old White female and a student at Murray State University. Originally from Farmville, Virginia, she was studying pre-veterinary medicine and served as a residential advisor at the College Courts Apartments. Her life was abruptly cut short, leading to a swift investigation that would soon uncover a heartbreaking story of friendship betrayed.
The tragic events began to
unfold on Friday, March 26, 2021, when a passerby made a grim discovery in a roadside ditch in southern Calloway County. The body, later identified as Sarah Townsend, was found on Fox Road. Concern had already been growing after she failed to show up for work that afternoon, prompting campus police to conduct a welfare check. An autopsy would later confirm that Townsend had died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigators quickly began piecing together the events leading to her death. Friends and relatives were interviewed, which helped establish her last known whereabouts. A significant lead came from tracking her Toyota Camry, which traffic cameras had spotted in central Georgia. This discovery led investigators to focus on a suspect who had ties to that same area, 22-year-old Julius Sotomayor of Dexter, Kentucky. It was revealed that Townsend and Sotomayor were friends, and he was believed to have been the last person with her.
In the early morning hours of Saturday, March 27, detectives located Sotomayor near his home. Nearby, they also found Townsend’s stolen Toyota Camry. Based on evidence and statements gathered, Sotomayor was arrested and charged with murder, theft by unlawful taking of an automobile, and tampering with physical evidence. He later admitted to shooting Sarah multiple times. In July 2022, Julius Sotomayor pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of Sarah Townsend.
