In the summer of 2022, a tragic event unfolded in an Aurora, Colorado shopping center parking lot that ended the life of 33-year-old Kion Lamenta Perkins. On July 19th, Perkins was discovered inside a vehicle, having been fatally shot. Originally from Decatur, Illinois, he was a father to three children. He was known for his love of basketball and video games.
The investigation into the shooting led to the identification and arrest of three suspects.
Two of the individuals, Tasin Sanderson, age 20, and Isaiah Rhodes, also 20, were connected to a separate shots-fired incident that occurred in Denver just a week after Perkins' death. The third suspect was identified as Daviyontre Sanderson. These arrests marked a significant turning point in a case that had left a family and community searching for answers.
The legal process that followed brought a measure of closure to the case. Tasin Sanderson pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with Perkins' death and was sentenced to 45 years in prison, to be served concurrently with a 25-year sentence for the Denver incident. Isaiah Rhodes pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated motor vehicle theft and accessory to a crime, receiving a 10-year prison sentence for his role in the Aurora case. The third suspect, Daviyontre Sanderson, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and was sentenced to 27 years in prison.
