In the fading light of a Wednesday evening, on September 26, 2018, a violent altercation in an alleyway in east Denver tragically cut short the life of 25-year-old Andro Charles Lowate. Lowate, a male of African descent whose family hailed from Sudan, was sometimes known to his friends as Andrew. The fatal encounter unfolded around 8:50 p.m. in the 1300 block of the alley situated between Yosemite and Xenia Streets, an area near the Community College of Aurora.
Following a physical fight, Lowate was shot and subsequently rushed to Denver Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound, and the manner of death was officially ruled a homicide.
The events leading up to the deadly shooting began with a physical confrontation between Lowate and a group of individuals. According to police reports, the group consisted of two to three Black men and one Black woman. During the fight, one of the men, described as a Black male in his 20s, produced a handgun and fired at Lowate. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the alleged gunman and his companions fled the scene on foot, disappearing into the surrounding neighborhood.
Despite the passage of time, the murder of Andro Charles Lowate remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made in connection with the case. The Denver Police Department has continued to appeal to the public for assistance in identifying the individuals involved in the altercation and shooting. Over the years, community members have provided several tips, but authorities have stated that there is still insufficient evidence to formally press charges. In an effort to generate new leads, a substantial reward has been offered for any information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of the person or persons responsible for Lowate's death. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives has contributed to this reward, which now stands at up to $12,000. Investigators continue to urge anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward as they seek justice for Andro Lowate and his family.
