In a tragic turn of events stemming from jealousy, 16-year-old Ryan A. Robertson, a male student at Grandview High School in Aurora, Colorado, was fatally shot on May 6, 2019. The incident was the culmination of a volatile situation involving the ex-boyfriend of his new girlfriend.
The conflict began earlier that day when 18-year-old Joseph McCaughin broke into his ex-girlfriend's home and threatened to kill her and her new partner, Ryan Robertson.
McCaughin had a history of stalking and physically abusing his ex-girlfriend, with whom he had been in a relationship for approximately three years before their breakup a year prior to the shooting. Robertson became a target of McCaughin's jealousy after he began dating the young woman.
Later that evening, Robertson, accompanied by a 15-year-old friend, arranged to meet McCaughin at Wagon Trail Park to confront him about his behavior towards his ex-girlfriend. During the confrontation, a verbal exchange escalated, leading McCaughin to pull a semi-automatic handgun from a backpack and fire multiple shots at Robertson. Witnesses stated that McCaughin appeared to be acting out of anger and specifically aimed for Robertson's head. The shooting occurred in alarming proximity to Independence Elementary School, where numerous children and adults were outside.
Robertson was struck by three bullets, one in the head, one in the lower back, and another in the right arm. He succumbed to his injuries while en route to the hospital. Following the shooting, McCaughin fled the scene and initially provided false information to the police and his mother regarding his whereabouts, claiming he was at a local mall. However, cell phone records placed him at the scene of the crime.
Approximately eight days after the shooting, law enforcement located and arrested McCaughin in Georgia. His trial took place in September 2021, where a jury, after deliberating for only three hours, found him guilty of first-degree murder. The trial brought to light the premeditated nature of the crime, underscoring McCaughin's history of violence and threats. On December 25, 2021, Joseph McCaughin was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Ryan A. Robertson.
