On a November evening in Aurora, Colorado, the life of 18-year-old David Ibanez was cut tragically short. The incident occurred on November 14, 2021, while the young man, a recent graduate of Thornton High School, was gathered with friends at a car meet in the northern part of the city, near East 33rd Place. Ibanez, a vibrant and athletic individual who excelled in multiple sports including baseball, golf, football, and basketball, had recently started a job at a pizza shop with aspirations of
one day becoming a firefighter.
The fatal event unfolded when a high school friend of Ibanez's, 18-year-old Abel Vargas, began showing off an AR-15 assault rifle. In a devastating turn of events, Vargas mishandled the firearm, causing it to accidentally discharge. A single bullet struck David at point-blank range. In the immediate aftermath, a friend drove Ibanez to a nearby hospital for medical attention, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died shortly after arriving. His mother, Aquilina Ibanez, later had the heartbreaking task of identifying her son's body by his tattoo and birthmarks.
The Aurora Police Department investigated the shooting and, two days later, on November 16, 2021, arrested Abel Vargas in connection with David's death. Vargas is facing a charge of manslaughter for his role in the unintentional shooting. The case is set to be prosecuted by the 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office. David's mother has publicly described the shooting as a 'tragic accident,' emphasizing that she does not believe her son was intentionally harmed by his friend. The family has since advocated for greater awareness about gun safety to prevent similar tragedies.
