Daniel Davis Aston, a 28-year-old transgender man, had found a sanctuary at Club Q in Colorado Springs. Having moved from Tulsa, Oklahoma, two years prior, he embraced his role as a bartender and entertainer at the LGBTQ+ nightclub, a place where he felt he could truly be himself. Known for his vibrant personality and penchant for making people laugh, he was a beloved figure, often seen sliding across the stage with his mullet trailing behind him during performances.
His parents, Jeff and Sabrina Aston, would sometimes attend his shows, cheering him on. He had discovered a sense of community and joy at the club, a feeling he had shared with friends.
The night of November 19, 2022, shattered that peace. A gunman, later identified as 22-year-old Anderson Lee Aldrich, entered Club Q armed with an AR-15-style rifle and a handgun, and began shooting indiscriminately at patrons and employees. In the midst of the chaos, Daniel Aston was fatally shot while reportedly shielding a coworker from the gunfire. Four other people lost their lives that night, and many more were injured in the attack. The rampage was stopped when heroic patrons managed to subdue the shooter until law enforcement arrived.
In the aftermath, the community mourned the loss of a man described as a 'huge light in this world'. Anderson Lee Aldrich was taken into custody and faced numerous charges, including first-degree murder and bias-motivated crimes. In June 2023, Aldrich pleaded guilty to five counts of murder and 46 counts of attempted murder, and also pleaded no contest to two hate crimes. The plea agreement resulted in a sentence of life in prison, bringing a close to the legal proceedings but leaving a permanent void for the family and friends of Daniel Davis Aston.
