In the early morning hours of January 3, 2025, the life of Rebecka Lightner, a 37-year-old Caucasian woman, was tragically cut short in her Omaha, Nebraska, apartment. The day began with the sound of gunshots piercing the pre-dawn quiet near 71st Street and Jones Circle, prompting calls to law enforcement. When officers arrived, they discovered a grim scene inside one of the units; Rebecka Lightner had been fatally shot.
As the investigation unfolded, a man matching a description
provided by callers was encountered by police in the vicinity. This individual, later identified as 39-year-old Brandon Brewer, allegedly fired a handgun twice at the officers, striking their cruiser. A foot pursuit ensued, during which an officer discharged their weapon but did not hit Brewer. He ultimately surrendered to the authorities and was taken into custody, with investigators recovering a handgun at the scene.
Brandon Brewer was subsequently arrested and faced a litany of charges, including criminal homicide, two counts of use of a weapon to commit a felony, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. A judge later ordered him to be held without bond. Court proceedings revealed a troubled past for Brewer, including a prior conviction for motor vehicle homicide in 2010, for which he had served time in prison.
