On September 23, 2017, a dispute between two women escalated into a fatal incident for the teenager. The conflict involved Shadaisja's mother, Porcha Hill, and a woman named Catessa Barnum, who was identified as a romantic rival.
The confrontation took a deadly turn when Catessa Barnum fired a gun.
Her lawyer would later claim the shot was intended as a warning to Porcha Hill and others who had gathered that morning. However, the bullet penetrated the side of the vehicle Shadaisja was in and struck the 15-year-old behind the ear, inflicting a mortal wound.
In the aftermath, Catessa Barnum faced legal consequences for her actions. She was charged in connection with the shooting and ultimately pleaded no contest to a charge of manslaughter. The court sentenced Barnum, who was 27 at the time of sentencing and had no prior criminal record, to five years of probation for the killing of Shadaisja Hill. A related weapons charge against her was dropped as part of the legal proceedings. The Douglas County Attorney expressed disagreement with the probation sentence but stated that it would not be appealed, noting that Barnum's clean record made probation a judicial option.
