In the early hours of July 4, 2021, the life of 19-year-old Jazmine Washington, a Black/African American female, was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. The incident unfolded shortly after 3 a.m. in a parking lot located near 2311 North 24th Street in Omaha, Nebraska. When law enforcement arrived at the scene following reports of multiple gunshots, they discovered a chaotic and violent scene.
Washington was found suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency responders transported Washington to Nebraska Medical Center for treatment, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The shooting, which marred the holiday weekend, also left five other individuals wounded. Those injured were identified as Janyah Tompkins, 20; Tameira Rollins, 20; Todd Wakefield, 50; Aashiah Barnes, 19; and Vonnia Johnson, 26. They were all treated for injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.
For several months, the case of Washington's death remained without a resolution, and investigators initially believed that multiple shooters may have been involved in the incident. A significant development in the investigation came on February 14, 2022, when the Omaha Police Department announced an arrest had been made in connection with the fatal shooting.
Authorities took 26-year-old Davelle Giles into custody and booked him into Douglas County Corrections. Giles is facing charges of second-degree murder and the use of a weapon to commit a felony for his alleged role in the death of Jazmine Washington. The arrest marked a turning point in a case that was part of a particularly violent weekend in Omaha, as it was the city's second homicide in just two days.
