Shannon N. Dalton, a 22-year-old woman from Omaha, Nebraska, was tragically shot and killed on September 7, 1998. At the time of her death, she was married to John Dalton Jr., with whom she had three young daughters. The couple resided at 3489 Ruggles Street in Omaha.
On the night of the incident, Shannon's body was discovered in the living room of their home. She had been fatally shot in the head.
At the time of the shooting, their three daughters ages 6, 5, and 3 were present in the house. The youngest daughter, who was 3 years old, was in the living room at the time of the shooting. The other two daughters were in a different room. The 3-year-old was later found hiding under a couch, and she was able to identify John Dalton Jr. as the shooter.
Following the shooting, John Dalton Jr. fled the scene, taking Shannon's car. He was apprehended two days later in Nashville, Tennessee. Initially charged with second-degree murder, Dalton Jr. pleaded guilty to manslaughter and weapons charges in 1999. He was sentenced to 20 to 30 years in prison and served approximately 11 years before being paroled in 2010.
The case remained relatively quiet until December 26, 2017, when John Dalton Jr. was arrested in Jackson, Tennessee, for the murders of his parents and niece. He was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and four weapons charges. Dalton Jr. pleaded guilty to these charges in December 2018 and was sentenced to three life terms plus up to 230 years in prison.
