In the late hours of a Friday night in Omaha, Nebraska, the life of 17-year-old Mauricio Omar Chavez of Council Bluffs was tragically cut short. On November 17, 2023, the teenager was at the Sippin Sirens bar located in the area of 42nd and H streets when he was shot. The incident occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m.
Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene, where they found Mauricio with a life-threatening gunshot wound.
Paramedics initiated life-saving measures and rushed him to the Nebraska Medicine medical center. Despite their efforts, Mauricio Omar Chavez succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. At the time of the initial police report, the motive for the shooting and information about any potential suspects were not immediately known.
Following an investigation into the fatal shooting, authorities identified a suspect. Sadi Matino was subsequently arrested in connection with the death of Mauricio Chavez. The case proceeded through the legal system, and Matino was ultimately convicted of manslaughter for the shooting death of the 17-year-old. For his role in the death of Mauricio Chavez and a related weapons conviction, Sadi Matino was sentenced to a prison term of 24 to 36 years. It was noted during the legal proceedings that at the time of the fatal shooting, Matino already had three other felony cases pending against him.
