In the early morning hours of October 5, 2025, a tragedy unfolded that cut short the life of 27-year-old Dequrae Murrel, a Black/African American female from Omaha, Nebraska. Known as "Rae" to her loved ones, she was described as a vibrant and caring person with a particular love for children, often working in after-school programs. Her family remembers her as a ray of sunshine with a beautiful smile, someone who was always willing to give her last to anyone in need.
She was a beloved daughter, sister, and aunt, considered a second mother to her nieces and nephews.
The events that led to her untimely death began at Levi Carter Park. For reasons that are still being investigated, Murrel was shot at this location. Despite her life-threatening injuries, she somehow managed to travel approximately five miles to the parking lot of Kelly's Liquor at 30th and Pinkney Streets. It was here that Omaha police officers found her. She was immediately transported to the hospital, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries the following day, on October 6, 2025. Her family was faced with the heart-wrenching decision to end life-sustaining measures.
The Omaha Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation into Murrel's death. Their efforts led to a significant development later that month. On October 27, 2025, authorities announced the arrest of 18-year-old Tranell Woodruff in connection with the fatal shooting. Woodruff has been charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm to commit a felony. While this arrest marks a crucial step towards justice for Dequrae Murrel and her grieving family, the community is left to mourn the senseless loss of a young woman who was a pillar of her family and a positive force in the lives of the children she worked with.
