In the early morning hours of December 4, 2023, the life of 26-year-old Hispanic female Esmeralda Vargas was tragically cut short in an Omaha, Nebraska motel. Police were dispatched to the Comfort Inn and Suites near 70th and Grover Streets around 5:40 a.m. following a report of a woman with a gunshot wound. They discovered Vargas in a third-floor hallway near an elevator, suffering from a wound to her chest.
Paramedics arrived and transported her to Bergan Mercy Hospital, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to Daniel Nichols as the primary suspect. Surveillance footage from the motel reportedly showed both Nichols and Vargas leaving a hotel room he had rented before Nichols was seen leaving the property in a Jeep. Investigators found drug paraphernalia in both the motel room and in Vargas's backpack. The manhunt for Nichols was brief, as he was arrested the following day in Missouri with the assistance of the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department, the Missouri Highway Patrol, the FBI, and the ATF. He was subsequently extradited back to Omaha to face charges.
Daniel Nichols was charged with first-degree murder and the use of a weapon to commit a felony. During his trial, compelling evidence was presented against him. A key piece of testimony came from Nichols' own brother, who told the court he received a distressing phone call from his brother on the morning of the murder. In that call, Nichols allegedly confessed that he had "shot a prostitute in the face." Based on the evidence, including the surveillance footage and witness testimony, a Douglas County jury found Daniel Nichols guilty of first-degree murder. He is scheduled to be sentenced for the crime.
