On November 30, 1975, 19-year-old Mary Kay Harmer of Omaha, Nebraska, was reported missing after attending a party at the residence of Thomas Edward "Red" Nesbitt, a known member of the Hells Angels motorcycle club. Harmer had been invited to the gathering by Kathleen Ray, an acquaintance who shared the house with Nesbitt. Ray and another woman, Brigitte Kohlert, brought Harmer to the party under the pretense of a social event but left shortly after, leaving Harmer alone with Nesbitt.
