George Maldonado, a 49-year-old man, was a beloved figure in the Colorado Springs racing community and the owner of Full Throttle Auto. On July 13, 2017, his life was tragically cut short in a brutal act of violence that shook those who knew him. Two men, disguised as utility workers, entered his auto shop with the intent to rob him. This encounter escalated into a horrific assault, during which Maldonado was pistol-whipped and stomped on.
He ultimately succumbed to blunt force trauma to the head. Another individual present at the shop was also attacked during the incident.
The investigation into the murder led authorities to identify two suspects: Eric Grant and Derrick Davis. An intensive search for the perpetrators was launched, and Grant was eventually apprehended in Pennsylvania, while Davis was also taken into custody. During the investigation, it was revealed that the suspects had cased the auto shop for several days leading up to the fatal robbery. Prosecutors presented evidence, including cell phone data, that placed both Grant and Davis in the vicinity of the crime scene. A graphic surveillance video from the auto shop played a crucial role in the trial, showing the two suspects surprising Maldonado and his friend.
The legal proceedings brought both men to justice for their roles in the senseless crime. Eric Grant was found guilty of murder, first-degree assault, and aggravated robbery. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, with an additional 25 years for assault. Derrick Davis was also found guilty of murder, aggravated robbery, and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, and he too faced a life sentence. The trials provided a measure of closure for Maldonado's grieving family and friends, who remembered him as a kind and generous man who was always willing to help others.
