In the early morning hours of August 7, 2024, the vibrant nightlife of downtown Colorado Springs was shattered by violence. Outside the Supernova Arcade Bar, located near Boulder Street and North Nevada Avenue, 44-year-old Dieter Gayfield was shot and killed. Police responded to reports of shots fired just after 2 a.m. and found Mr. Gayfield at the scene, having sustained at least one gunshot wound. He tragically died from his injuries at the scene.
His death was investigated as a homicide by the Colorado Springs Police Department.
The investigation into the death of Dieter Gayfield, a beloved father of two daughters, led to the identification of two suspects. On August 20, 2024, police arrested 22-year-old Jonathan Matos-Michaelis, charging him with first-degree murder. Shortly after, on August 23, 26-year-old Gabriel Ian-Justice Russo was also taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting. The arrests brought a measure of progress in a case that had deeply affected the community and left a family grappling with a sudden and violent loss.
Friends and family remembered Dieter Gayfield as a man with a 'legendary personality' and an 'infectious laugh.' He was described as having a giving and helpful nature, a warm heart, and a kind soul. His obituary noted his positive vibes and his jokester behavior that brought laughter to others. He was a loving father, not only to his own two daughters but also as a father figure to many others in the community. His loss was deeply felt by his girlfriend, parents, sister, nieces, nephew, and a wide circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will forever cherish their memories of him.
