In the early evening of a Tuesday in Colorado Springs, a call reporting a shooting broke the calm in the 1200 block of Potter Drive. When police officers arrived at the scene on November 22, 2022, they found a man who had already succumbed to his injuries. The deceased was identified as 30-year-old Carlos Enrique Diaz-Valdes, a resident of the city.
The initial investigation suggested that this was not a random act of violence, as it was believed that the victim and the person who shot him were acquainted with each other.
The El Paso County Coroner's Office conducted an autopsy and officially ruled the death of the Hispanic male a homicide, marking the 48th such investigation in Colorado Springs that year. As detectives delved deeper into the case, interviewing several witnesses who were present at the scene, a suspect began to emerge. The investigation pointed towards another man with whom Diaz-Valdes was familiar, leading the Colorado Springs Police Department's Homicide Unit to secure an arrest warrant.
The suspect was identified as Raciel Rojas-Vazquez. A week after the fatal shooting, on November 29, 2022, a warrant for first-degree murder was issued for his arrest. The following day, Rojas-Vazquez was apprehended in Laredo, Texas, by personnel from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, bringing a swift development to the ongoing investigation into the death of Carlos Enrique Diaz-Valdes.
