On a Friday afternoon in Colorado Springs, Qualin Campbell, a 31-year-old Black man, found himself in a terrifying situation. While on his lunch break on June 2, 2023, a man forced his way into Campbell's work vehicle in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant. In the frightening moments that followed, Campbell covertly texted his wife, Tali’Ja, sending a picture of the man who was now in his car, his location, and a desperate plea: '911.

Tali’Ja Campbell immediately called 911, explaining that she believed her husband had been taken hostage. Feeling a lack of urgency from the dispatcher, she made the decision to drive to his location herself, which was less than a mile from the police department's headquarters. Nearly an hour passed from her initial call, and upon her arrival, she found a scene of horror. Her husband was slumped over in the driver's seat of his car. Beside him sat the man from the photo, who was also deceased with a gun in his lap. It was Tali'Ja who had to make the initial attempts to save her husband, finding that he had no pulse.
The Colorado Springs Police Department, who arrived after a second 911 call was made from the scene by Campbell's uncle, are investigating the incident as a murder-suicide. The other man in the vehicle was identified as 44-year-old David Karels. Another report identified the man as David Emmanuel Guidry, a homeless man with a history of arrests in the area. An autopsy confirmed that Campbell's death was a homicide.
The family of Qualin Campbell, a father of two, has publicly questioned the delayed response from the police, suggesting that he might still be alive if they had arrived sooner. They have since filed a lawsuit against the owners of the property where the incident occurred, alleging that negligence in addressing criminal activity in the area contributed to Campbell's death. The police department has stated that the loss of Qualin Campbell is a tragedy and that their priority is to provide answers to his family.
