In the early hours of Mother's Day, a joyous family birthday celebration in Colorado Springs, Colorado, turned into a scene of unimaginable horror. Among the victims of the ensuing tragedy was Jose Gutierrez, a 21-year-old Hispanic male, whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence. The gathering, filled with laughter and family, was held at the Canterbury Manufactured Home Community on Preakness Way.
The celebration was for a family member, and the atmosphere was festive
until the unexpected arrival of 28-year-old Teodoro Macias. Macias was the boyfriend of one of the attendees, Sandra Ibarra, and had become angered after not being invited to the party. This exclusion fueled a rage that would have devastating consequences. Shortly after midnight on May 9, 2021, Macias entered the mobile home and opened fire on the unsuspecting family members.
In the chaos that followed, six individuals, including Jose Gutierrez, were fatally wounded. The other victims were identified as Joana Cruz, 52; Melvin Perez, 30; Mayra Ibarra de Perez, 33; Sandra Ibarra-Perez, 28; and Jose Ibarra, 26. The scene was one of profound tragedy, with lives extinguished in a matter of moments. First responders arrived to a harrowing sight, discovering the deceased and a gravely wounded Jose Gutierrez, who was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect, Teodoro Macias, was found deceased at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. An investigation into the mass shooting determined that the motive was rooted in domestic violence, with Macias's jealousy and anger over the party invitation leading to the horrific attack.
