The incident unfolded around 3:30 a.m. in the 2800 block of Concord Street, where Montoya was found deceased in a detached garage behind a residence. An investigation determined that Montoya had died from a gunshot wound, and his death was officially ruled a homicide.
Originally from Colorado Springs, Ethan Montoya was a resident of
Denver at the time of his death. He was born on September 12, 1985, and had graduated from Sand Creek High School in 2005. Described as having a zest for life, a memorable smile, and a big heart, he was a cherished friend to many.
In connection with the fatal shooting, authorities arrested 24-year-old Benjamin Sinclair. He faced a charge of manslaughter in Montoya's death. Investigators believed that drugs and alcohol may have been contributing factors in the shooting. The death of Ethan Montoya marked the 16th homicide in Colorado Springs that year.
