Cassandra Kirkman, a 51-year-old White woman, was found dead in her home in Roswell, New Mexico, on February 19, 2022, after police were sent to a residence in the 900 block of South Caminisito Street just before 1 p.m. Officers arriving on the shots-fired call discovered she had been killed by a single gunshot wound to the head, turning what began as a domestic dispute inside a shared household into Roswell’s first homicide of 2022.
Investigators said the violence built quickly from an argument into a physical fight. Accounts described Kirkman using an object others characterized as a pipe during the struggle. In the middle of the chaos, her roommate, Melissa Kenyon, allegedly got hold of a gun that was kept in the residence. As the fight continued, Kenyon was accused of pointing the firearm at Kirkman and firing a single shot that struck her in the head.
When responding officers reached the scene, Kenyon and her boyfriend, Uriah Shields, were outside the home and were taken to the police station for questioning as part of the investigation. Authorities identified the weapon as a. 22 caliber handgun and said it belonged to Shields, who was described as a convicted felon barred from possessing firearms.
Arrests followed as the case shifted from a frantic call for help to a homicide prosecution. Kenyon was charged with voluntary manslaughter, while Shields faced a separate charge for unlawful firearm possession tied to the gun used in the killing. Reports also noted a troubled history inside the home, saying law enforcement had been called there previously because of conflict between Kirkman and Kenyon.
In court filings, prosecutors argued the danger did not end with the shooting itself. They sought to keep Kenyon jailed while the case moved forward, pointing to concerns about witness safety, and describing the decision to arm herself as a turning point—an escalation, they alleged, when there had still been an opportunity to step back.
