In the late hours of August 26, 2018, the life of 19-year-old Mark Diaz, a male resident of Holyoke, Massachusetts, was tragically cut short. On that Sunday, officers from the Holyoke Police Department were dispatched to 256 Maple Street following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered Diaz inside the residence, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide revealed that a party was taking place at the Maple Street address, featuring performances by local musicians, including Mark Diaz himself. At some point during the event, Diaz walked outside onto the street. It was there that he was shot. Wounded, he managed to retreat back inside the building before collapsing. The Hampden District Attorney's Office, along with the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit and the Holyoke Police Department, immediately launched a thorough investigation into the shooting.
For nearly two years, the case remained under active investigation. Then, in April 2020, a significant breakthrough occurred. Authorities arrested 23-year-old Derrick Brooks of Springfield in connection with the murder of Mark Diaz. Brooks was subsequently charged with murder and was ordered to be held without the right to bail. The investigation continued after the arrest, with law enforcement officials thanking the diligent efforts of the detectives who worked tirelessly to bring a suspect to justice for the death of the young musician.
