In the early hours of Saturday, May 13, 2023, the life of 27-year-old Hispanic male Jasell Camacho of Chicopee was tragically cut short in Holyoke, Massachusetts. At approximately 1:32 a.m., the Holyoke Police Department was alerted to gunfire by a ShotSpotter activation in the vicinity of the 100 block of Lyman Street. Arriving at the scene, which was specifically at the corner of High and Lyman streets, officers discovered Camacho on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound.

Emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures on Camacho at the scene, but their efforts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead. Shortly after the police were notified of the shooting, another individual, later identified as 34-year-old James Carmenatty of Holyoke, was taken by private transportation to Holyoke Medical Center for treatment of a gunshot wound. Investigators believed his injury was connected to the same incident that resulted in Camacho's death.

In the days that followed, detectives investigating the homicide developed probable cause and obtained an arrest warrant for Carmenatty. On Wednesday, May 17, 2023, he was charged with murder. Carmenatty was taken into custody and transported to the Holyoke Police Department on May 19, 2023. He was arraigned in Holyoke District Court on the same day and is being held without the right to bail. The investigation into Camacho's death continued, leading to the arrest of a second suspect, Ryan Navarro, who was also charged with murder and arraigned in Holyoke District Court. He is also being held without the right to bail. The case is being investigated by the Holyoke Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney's Office, and the Hampden District Attorney's Office's Murder Unit.
