In the early hours of August 7, 2017, the life of 31-year-old Colin Hodges, a male Navy veteran, was tragically cut short in his hometown of Holyoke, Massachusetts. Police responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 1:06 a.m. on South Summer Street. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene on the second-floor rear porch of a residence. Hodges and another man, Arnaldo Rentas, aged 37, were found with apparent gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services were dispatched, but both men were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Colin Hodges was a graduate of Holyoke High School and was pursuing a business degree at Holyoke Community College. He had served in the United States Navy from 2006 to 2013, completing operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait. Known for his commitment to his community, Hodges had organized events for needy families, including a Thanksgiving dinner that his family planned to continue in his memory. He was a father, son, and brother, leaving behind a young son and a loving family.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly identified a suspect. Detectives from the Holyoke Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney's Office began to piece together the events of that fatal morning. Their investigation led them to seek 19-year-old Ivan Ramos of Holyoke in connection with the killings. It is believed that Hodges and Rentas had arrived at the second-floor apartment where an altercation occurred, and Ramos allegedly fired several shots at the two men as they tried to flee.
A few days after the shooting, on August 10, 2017, Ivan Ramos turned himself in to the authorities at the Holyoke Police Department. The Hampden District Attorney's Office announced his surrender, attributing it in part to the widespread media coverage of the search for him. The investigation remained ongoing following his arrest, as law enforcement continued to seek any information the public could provide about the tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of Colin Hodges and Arnaldo Rentas.
