On the evening of December 7, 2022, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, a burst of gunfire shattered the night at the intersection of Pine and Sargeant Streets. When police responded to reports of shots fired at approximately 8:20 p.m., they discovered a scene suggesting a violent confrontation: two unoccupied vehicles that seemed to have been in a collision and numerous spent shell casings littering the ground.
A search of the immediate area led to a grim discovery in a nearby backyard – a man lying face down with a gunshot wound to his stomach. The man was identified as Luis Ramos, a 49-year-old Hispanic male from Holyoke. He was rushed to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The investigation into the death of Luis Ramos was a collaborative effort between the Holyoke Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney's Office, and the Hampden District Attorney's Office's Murder Unit. Their investigation pointed to a targeted act of violence. Evidence suggested that the incident began as a vehicle collision, which escalated dramatically. More than ten rounds were fired at Ramos, who was in the second vehicle. The shooter was identified as an occupant of the other car.
Investigators quickly zeroed in on a suspect: 21-year-old Evdyele Oniel Pabon Flores of Springfield. Believed to be the gunman, a warrant for his arrest on the charge of murder was issued. For a time, Pabon Flores remained at large and was considered to be actively evading capture. His fugitive status led to his placement on the Massachusetts State Police's "Most Wanted" list. Authorities circulated his description, noting he had ties to the greater Springfield area and should be considered armed and dangerous. The search for Pabon Flores came to an end on April 14, 2023, when he turned himself in to the authorities, bringing a significant development to the case of the violent death of Luis Ramos.
