In the early evening of July 29, 2020, a burst of violence shattered the typical summer atmosphere near the Holyoke Mall. Carlos E. Ruemmele, a 23-year-old male from Springfield, was fatally shot in an incident that unfolded near the mall's entrance at the intersection of Holyoke Street and Lower Westfield Road. The shooting, which occurred around 6 p.m., prompted a swift police response. However, upon their arrival, authorities found the scene empty.
