In the early evening of July 29, 2020, a burst of violence shattered the typical summer atmosphere near the Holyoke Mall. Carlos E. Ruemmele, a 23-year-old male from Springfield, was fatally shot in an incident that unfolded near the mall's entrance at the intersection of Holyoke Street and Lower Westfield Road.
