In the early evening of Thursday, December 22, 2016, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of a Holyoke, Massachusetts neighborhood, leaving a 55-year-old White/Caucasian male, Anthony Sirakowski, dead. Holyoke Police officers were dispatched to 100 Pine Street around 5:30 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered an unresponsive Sirakowski inside his camper, which he called home.
Responding officers immediately began administering first aid as paramedics were called to the scene. During the urgent transport to Baystate Medical Center, it was determined that Sirakowski had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced deceased upon his arrival at the hospital.
The investigation into the homicide, led by the Holyoke Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney's Office, was swift and effective. Investigators quickly identified a person of interest, and through that lead, a second suspect was developed. This rapid progress led to the arrests of two Holyoke men, 24-year-old Eric Carattini and 20-year-old Nashan Perez. Both were taken into custody and charged with the murder of Anthony Sirakowski.
Authorities stated that the shooting was not a random act of violence, suggesting that the victim may have been targeted. The day after the fatal shooting, both Carattini and Perez were arraigned in Holyoke District Court. Subsequently, in February 2017, a Hampden County Grand Jury handed down indictments against both men in connection with Sirakowski's death, moving the case forward for prosecution and the pursuit of justice for the victim and his family.
