In the winter of 2020, a young Black/African American man's life was cut short in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Raequese Jayvon Wright, a 21-year-old male from Springfield, was fatally shot on the evening of Saturday, January 11, 2020. The incident that claimed his life unfolded just after 7 p.m. in the downtown area of the city, marking a weekend of violence in Holyoke.
Known to his loved ones as "Bubbah," Wright was a graduate of Springfield Public Day High School and was remembered as a bright and gifted individual.
For a year, the question of who was responsible for Wright's death lingered. The investigation into the homicide continued, seeking to bring justice for the young man whose life was taken so suddenly. Then, nearly a year to the day after the fatal shooting, a breakthrough was announced in the case.
In January 2021, authorities confirmed the arrest of a suspect. Jose Gonzales-Diaz, 25, of Holyoke, was taken into custody and charged with the murder of Raequese Wright. The arrest marked a significant development in the investigation, bringing a sense of resolution to a case that had remained open for a year. The Hampden District Attorney's office announced that Gonzales-Diaz was wanted in connection with the deadly shooting that occurred on Sargeant Street, where Wright was found with gunshot wounds.
