On the evening of September 8, 2021, Christian Talib Willis, a 21-year-old Black male from Wichita, was fatally shot in Lawrence, Kansas. The incident occurred around 7:15 p.m. in the 1500 block of Kentucky Street. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they found Willis, who was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The location of the shooting was near the University of Kansas campus, though Willis was not a student there.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, which some initially mistook for fireworks. One witness described seeing a black car leaving the parking lot as the smell of gunpowder hung in the air.
The investigation into the death of Christian Talib Willis led to the identification and arrest of two suspects from Lawrence. About a week and a half after the shooting, police arrested an 18-year-old man. The second suspect, a 19-year-old, was apprehended in Tennessee on October 6 by U.S. Marshals and was subsequently extradited to Douglas County. Both men were initially charged with first-degree murder in connection with Willis's death.
The two men arrested were Javier Isidro Romero and Andrel Darnell Spates Jr. The case proceeded through the legal system, and in January, both men entered no-contest pleas to lesser charges. Spates pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter, while Romero pleaded no contest to second-degree murder. Court filings revealed that the shooting occurred during a drug deal. Spates' defense argued that he shot Willis in defense of Romero after Willis allegedly pulled a gun on him with the intent to rob them. In April 2024, the two men were sentenced. Spates received a sentence of just over 17 years in prison, while Romero was sentenced to more than six years.
