In the early evening hours of March 6, 2024, Vincent Lee Walker, a 39-year-old Black / African American male, was fatally shot near a bus stop in Lawrence, Kansas. The incident occurred in the 700 block of Vermont Street, directly across from the Lawrence Public Library, shortly after 5 p.m. Walker, a local musician known by the stage name "V-Dubb," was a familiar face to many in the community.
On the day of the shooting, Walker was reportedly involved in a verbal altercation with an
individual who had thrown his food on the sidewalk. As bystanders intervened to de-escalate the situation, another man, later identified as Nicholas Laron Beaver, approached on a bicycle and exchanged words with Walker. Witnesses stated that Walker told the man on the bicycle not to talk to him again. The man on the bicycle started to ride away but then turned back, confronted Walker again, and shot him multiple times. Walker collapsed at the scene and was pronounced dead despite efforts to resuscitate him.
The assailant fled on his bicycle towards a nearby park. Later that same evening, law enforcement located and arrested Nicholas Laron Beaver, a 32-year-old from Topeka who had been staying at the Lawrence Community Shelter. Beaver was taken into custody at the intersection of West Sixth and Michigan streets. Investigators were able to connect Beaver to the crime through witness testimony, surveillance footage from the area, and DNA evidence found on the discarded murder weapon and the bicycle.
Initially, Beaver was charged with second-degree murder and misdemeanor battery. During a preliminary hearing in October 2024, the prosecution presented evidence and witness testimony, but a judge initially denied the request to elevate the charge to first-degree murder. However, in February 2025, the Douglas County District Attorney's Office successfully argued for the charge to be upgraded to first-degree murder, presenting additional evidence that suggested premeditation. In July 2025, a Douglas County jury found Nicholas Laron Beaver guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Vincent Lee Walker. His defense attorney had argued that Beaver acted in self-defense after Walker allegedly spat in his face, a claim the prosecution characterized as a fatal overreaction.
